Born in Gilesgate, Durham, he was a groom when he joined 4 (Militia) DLI in 1887, aged 19 years. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and served in the Boer War attached to 3 (Militia) DLI. In 1901, he was awarded the DCM, the only soldier of 4 DLI to receive this medal. He became ill in South Africa and was discharged "medically unfit" in June 1901.
